Embedding CNN videos in WordPress

19 Mar

In a recent post, I had issues embedding a CNN video clip into the body of the post. I’ve been able to embed YouTube & Vimeo clip rather easily. So I did a lot of digging and found a page in which the author was able to embed video from CNN!! I asked him to post the html of the link and he provided it to me as:

I then attempted to just replace my url from the link that CNN gives you into the formula above…but that didn’t work (by the way, there is a space after “cnnvideo” and the rest of the code). Then I realized, that the single quotes before and after the url should be double quotes. I also noticed that CNN’s link that they give you, doesn’t have the “www” in the url. Making these changes to the code, it now works!! CNN clips are viewable in WordPress!!!

Case in point…here you go!!

Thanks! It’d be nicer if the code was in a box that you could copy/paste though.

Sucked to have to retype everything by hand, but thanks for finding the solution to my problems for me, either way. 🙂

      Dickjutsu,

I agree…it would be nice if WordPress did that, or even if CNN would put an embed code for WordPress on their videos. However, seeing that WordPress is still free, I guess we have to go through a few hoops to get things the way we really want them to be. I find that I have to learn a little bit of code to truly get my blog the way I want them. In so doing, I figure that I’d share that info along, because I’m sure someone else will want to do it too. It also helps me when I haven’t posted a blog post in a while, remember how to do something more than just post text. You may want to either bookmark this post if you find you’re linking other CNN videos or repost it on your blog (please give me credit) so that you can remember later on.

I believe that Dickjutsu was referring to the fact that you used an image to show the code on this page (I could be wrong but that’s what struck me before I got down to the comments section). You can use a plugin like Crayon Syntax Highlighter instead to allow us to easily copy the code snippet you put on this page. Thanks for the tip but, after reading Glenn Robinson’s advice I saw that CNN has the embed code now.

Hey! I tried it but it didn’t work for me. Cnn gives me the version. Could you help me figure this out?

I can try my best Amanda. What are you trying to do exactly? What video are you trying to use on WordPress?

I’ve figured it out. 🙂 Thanks! Also there is an updated blogging platform made just for bloggers called the Blog Beast which is much easier to use than WordPress.

Not really working for me. Tried all suggestions above…may not work with the latest version of WP?

I’m not so certain that it’s WordPress that’s the problem, as the video above still plays. My guess is that you may be having an issue with the right code from CNN, as they tend to offer several options. Play around with it a bit…you may get it! If you want me to take a look, send me the link to the video and I’ll see if I can get the right code that’ll work in WordPress (no promises though, as I’m rarely even on WordPress anymore!).

    Thank you Tim!
I got it to work by pasting in the URL from CNN’s embed code, which is available after clicking share from the CNN video.
